Location:
Peru (Countrywide)
Event:
Anti-government protestors are planning demonstrations on Friday, July 19, 2024 in multiple locations across Peru, including Lima, Cusco, Arequipa, Piura, Cajamarca, and other cities. These protests may impact traffic in and around central Lima, as well as in other cities and major thoroughfares around the country. Expect heavy traffic conditions and a heightened security presence. In Lima, protestors will gather at Plaza 2 de Mayo, but may move to other areas around the city. Labor leaders in Cusco have called for a general strike in the Cusco region on July 19, and other cities and regions may do the same. Although the strike in Cusco may not be intended to affect tourism, travelers should be aware that tourist travel routes have been disrupted by previous strikes and protests. The Embassy has advised its personnel to avoid the areas of the demonstrations.
Actions to take:
- Avoid crowds and demonstrations.
- Do not interfere with or attempt to circumvent roadblocks; travelers have been injured doing so in the past.
- Follow instructions from the Peruvian National Police, Peruvian Armed Forces, and local authorities.
- Monitor local media for updates.
- Keep a low profile.
