The U.S. Embassy is monitoring reports of a potential strike by workers from the SICASMIGRA labor union responsible for working at ports of entry into Peru. SICASMIGRA announced plans for an indefinite nationwide strike of the agency’s contractors beginning July 27, 2024. This strike could cause disruption or delays at Peruvian ports of entry to include Jorge Chavez International Airport in Lima, the port of Callao, and land border crossings. The SICASMIGRA strike does not currently include the customs and immigration officers operating at these ports of entry, and the Government of Peru has declared the strike impermissible.
The Embassy is not aware of any known major disruptions or closure of ports of entry at this time. Travelers should monitor local media for developments and adjust travel plans accordingly.
