Demonstration Alert: U.S. Embassy Lima, Peru

Event: Demonstrations and Traffic Problems (December 11, 2022)
Demonstrations continue in multiple locations across Peru and there continue to be roadblocks along the Pan-American Highway at KM 261, 271, 290, and 299 near Ica and Paracas. There are reported violent demonstrations in the region of Apurimac, particularly the city of Andahuaylas, which resulted in the closure of the Andahuylas airport. There are strikes taking place throughout the Apurimac region. There are also reports of peaceful demonstrators moving on foot from Arequipa to Lima. There remains the ongoing potential for additional protests in Lima and throughout Peru. Please remember that even peaceful demonstrations may quickly escalate or turn violent.
Actions to Take:
- Avoid crowds.
- Avoid demonstrations.
- Monitor local media for updates.
- Follow traffic police instructions.
- Comply with instructions from the Peruvian National Police and local authorities.
- Register in STEP ( https://step.state.gov/) to receive alerts and messaging from the U.S. Embassy in Lima.
