The Cusco Airport (CUZ) is open and flights are departing at a normal volume. Travelers should not travel to the airport until they have a confirmed flight that indicates it will depart on time and should carry a printed copy of their boarding pass or reservation. Demonstrations took place overnight December 19-20 in the Cusco area. The train tracks to and from Aguas Calientes/Machu Picchu sustained additional damage, with rails and ties ripped out of the railway bed by protestors. While the Peruvian government assisted all tourists with departure from the Aguas Calientes/Machu Picchu area on December 17-18, the U.S. Embassy strongly recommends that tourists reschedule any planned trips to Aguas Calientes/Machu Picchu at this time.
Additional demonstrations may occur in the Cusco area, as well as possible roadblocks, traffic congestion, and disruptions. Consult with your hotel staff regarding transportation options to the airport. Avoid areas of demonstrations, as protests and demonstrations can be unpredictable and quickly turn violent.
The U.S. Consular Agency in Cusco is open for special emergency services at Avenida El Sol 449 in Cusco from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. from December 19 to December 23.
