Demonstration Alert: Transportation Disruptions in Puno, between Cusco and Puno, and at Bolivian Border
U.S. Embassy Lima, Peru – December 21, 2022
3 MINUTE READ
December 21, 2022

Location:

Peru

Event:

Transportation service providers in the Puno region near Lake Titicaca have declared an indefinite strike.  Demonstrators are blocking streets in the city of Puno and in surrounding areas.  The highway between Puno and Cusco is also blocked and there are demonstrations in the district of Combapata.  Highways and roads in southern Puno leading to the border with Bolivia are also restricted.

The Cusco Airport (CUZ) is open and flights are departing at a normal volume.  The Juliaca Airport (JUL) near Puno reopened for commercial flights December 20.  The Alfredo Mendivil Airport (AYP) near Ayacucho reopened for commercial flights on December 21.  Travelers should not travel to the airport until they have a confirmed flight that indicates it will depart on time and should carry a printed copy of their boarding pass or reservation.  The front desk at your hotel can assist you with printing out your boarding pass.  Please check with your air carrier to confirm your flight status and/or request rebooking information.

Additional demonstrations may occur without warning, as well as possible roadblocks, traffic congestion, and disruptions.  Consult with your hotel staff regarding transportation options to the airport.  Avoid areas of demonstrations, as protests and demonstrations can be unpredictable and quickly turn violent.

The U.S. Consular Agency in Cusco is open for emergency services at Avenida El Sol 449 in Cusco from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  The Consular Section at the U.S. Embassy in Lima is also open on the same schedule.
