Peru (countrywide)
Event:
A variety of civil society groups, political parties, and activists have announced plans for protest actions December 7-9, 2023 in multiple locations across Peru. These protests may include demonstrations, marches, and highway or bridge blockades. Additionally, demonstrations may occur in conjunction with the planned December 6 release of former Peruvian President Fujimori from prison.
Protesters may block main thoroughfares in Lima and in other parts of the country. During past demonstrations, protestors have halted traffic on the Panamerican Highway. Heightened security and disruptions to transport and business are possible during demonstrations. Past demonstrations have turned violent and have involved clashes between protesters and police and/or among supporters of rival political parties or groups. The U.S. Embassy advises U.S. citizens to avoid all areas of demonstrations.
Actions to take:
- Avoid crowds and demonstrations; keep a low profile if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
- Do not interfere with or attempt to circumvent roadblocks; travelers have been injured doing so in the past.
- Comply with instructions from the Peruvian National Police, Peruvian Armed Forces, and local authorities.
- Monitor local media for updates.
