First Lady Melania Trump joined Secretary of State Mike Pompeo today in Washington in presenting the International Women of Courage Award to Razia Sultana of Bangladesh, Naw K’nyaw Paw of Burma, Moumina Houssein Darar of Djibouti, Mama Maggie of Egypt, Colonel Khalida Khalaf Hanna al-Twal of Jordan, Sister Orla Treacy of Ireland, Olivera Lakic of Montenegro, Marini de Livera of Sri Lanka, Anna Aloys Henga of Tanzania, and Flor de María Vega Zapata of Peru.

We salute the recognition of Public Attorney Vega Zapata for her role as part of a broad inter-agency effort in Peru that includes the Ministries of Environment and Energy and Mines, the Peruvian National Police, Public Ministry, armed forces, Peru’s Forest and Wildlife Service (SERFOR), and many other Peruvian entities, in confronting illegal mining in Peru.

Flor de María Vega Zapata was honored for her tireless and visionary efforts to change the enforcement of environmental law in Peru, despite threats to derail her work, and promoting good environmental management to protect Peru’s environmental resources and the communities that depend on them.
