Event: Arequipa Region in Strict Lockdown for 15 Days (June 19, 2021)
On June 19, 2021, the Government of Peru announced the extension of emergency self-quarantine and movement restrictions due to high levels of COVID-19 spread, effective Monday, June 21 to July 11, 2021.
Due to increased levels of COVID-19, the Arequipa Region will be under strict lockdown for 15 days beginning on Monday June 21, 2021. U.S. citizens are advised to review their travel plans accordingly. Please see below for updates to alert levels for cities and regions around Peru.
All air and land transportation in and out of the Arequipa Department will be suspended for a period 15 days. During this suspension, inter-province travel within the Arequipa Department is prohibited. The use of private vehicles in the Arequipa Department is also prohibited.
The Jorge Chavez International airport in Lima remains open, and domestic land and air transportation continue with reduced occupancy in all other regions of the country.
As of June 21, 2021 Regions considered on “Extreme Alert” include, Amazonas (Chachapoyas), Arequipa (Arequipa, Camaná, Caravelí, Castilla, Caylloma, Islay), Ayacucho (Lucanas), and Cusco (Espinar).
Regions considered on “Very High Alert” are Amazonas (with the exception of the provinces listed in extreme alert), Ancash, Apurímac, Arequipa (with the exception of the provinces listed in extreme alert), Ayacucho (with the exception of the provinces listed in extreme alert), Cusco (with the exception of the provinces listed in extreme alert), Junín, Moquegua, Pasco, and Tacna.
Regions considered on “High Alert” are Callao, Cajamarca, Huancavelica, Huánuco, Ica, La Libertad, Lambayeque, Lima, Madre de Dios, Piura, Puno, San Martin, and Tumbes.
Region considered as “Moderate Alert” are the Loreto and Ucayali regions.
Additional Details for Extreme Alert levels:
- Monday-Saturday curfew is 9:00p.m. to 4:00 a.m.
- Sunday curfew is 24 hours.
- On all days of the week, restaurants may deliver from 4:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. Pharmacy delivery is available 24 hours. Taking taxis and public transportation is allowed.
- Monday – Saturday, supermarkets and grocery stores are open at 40% occupancy. Restaurants are open at 30% occupancy. Banks are open at 40% occupancy. Salons, spas, and barbershops at 40% occupancy by appointment. Casinos, gyms, movie theaters, churches are open at 20% occupancy.
- Beaches remain closed.
- Open-air team sports and club activities are prohibited.
Additional Details for Very High Alert levels:
- Monday-Sunday curfew is 10:00p.m. to 4:00 a.m.
- On all days of the week, restaurants may deliver from 4:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. Pharmacy delivery is available 24 hours. Taking taxis and public transportation is allowed.
- Monday – Sunday, supermarkets and grocery stores are open at 50% occupancy. Restaurants are open at 40% occupancy. Banks are open at 50% occupancy. Salons, spas, and barbershops at 50% occupancy by appointment. Casinos, gyms, movie theaters, churches are open at 30% occupancy.
- Beaches remain closed.
- Open-air team sports and club activities are prohibited.

- Monday-Sunday curfew is 11:00p.m. to 4:00 a.m.
- On all days of the week, restaurants may deliver from 4:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. Pharmacy delivery is available 24 hours. Taking taxis and public transportation is allowed.
- Monday – Sunday, supermarkets and grocery stores are open at 60% occupancy. Restaurants are open at 50% occupancy. Banks are open at 60% occupancy. Salons, spas, and barbershops at 40% occupancy by appointment. Casinos, gyms, movie theaters, churches are open at 40% occupancy.
- Beaches remain closed.
- Open-air team sports and club activities are prohibited.
Additional Movement Restrictions for all Alert levels:
- On Sundays, the use of personal vehicles is prohibited. Taking taxis and public transportation is allowed.
- On Sunday, June 20th, Peru will have a nation-wide lockdown for Father’s Day to avoid large gatherings. Vehicles are prohibited. In case of emergency, trips to the pharmacy, market, or restaurant on foot or by bike are allowed.
Air Travel Restrictions:
- Effective thru July 11, 2021, Peruvian citizens and permanent residents who have traveled from or transited through Brazil, South Africa, or India must quarantine in their home, lodging, or isolated space for a period of 14 days.
- Effective thru July 11, 2021, all non-Peruvian citizens and non-permanent residents who are traveling from, or transiting through Brazil, South Africa, or India are barred from entering Peru.
- Peruvians, resident foreigners, and non-resident foreigners entering Peruvian national territory, regardless of their country of origin, must present a molecular or antigen test with a negative result prior to boarding an incoming flight to Peru, in accordance with current health regulations.

Actions to Take:
- Monitor local media for updates. Movement restrictions may be changed unexpectedly and with very short notice.
- Always wear your mask outside. Face masks are required by Peruvian law. You may be fined if you do not wear one or do not comply with curfew and quarantine regulations. There are currently no exceptions for vaccinated individuals.
- Double masks are required, and face shields are recommended in highly populated indoor areas such as shopping malls, department stores, pharmacies, and grocery stores. You will not be permitted to enter without them.
- Wash your hands frequently, and respect social distancing guidelines.
- Carry a photo ID.
