Health Alert – Dengue Fever in Peru (February 14, 2020)

Location: Regions of Loreto, Madre de Dios, Ucayali, San Martín, and the jungle areas of Cusco and Junín regions.

Event: Dengue is an ongoing risk in Peru. On February 7, 2020 Government of Peru declared a 90-day long Health Emergency for certain areas of Loreto, Madre de Dios, and San Martín regions due to the current exceptionally high rates of Dengue Fever there. Recent reports from the Peruvian Ministry of Health indicate that Dengue cases have not been reported in the vicinity of Machu Picchu or the Sacred Valley.

Actions to Take:

  • Prevent mosquito bites. There is currently no vaccine that is widely available/recommended or medicine to prevent dengue.
  • Visit CDC’s website on Dengue Fever.
