EVENT

Peruvian authorities have reported a rise in dengue fever cases in several regions, including in the Lima metropolitan area.  As of February 21, Peru’s Center for Disease Control reported 24,981 cases and 28 deaths due to dengue fever.  Dengue fever is a viral mosquito-borne disease.  The virus is transmitted to people from the bite from an infected Aedes mosquito. Dengue fever is characterized by sudden onset of fever, chills, and headache, followed by general bone and muscle aches, and sometimes a rash.  Symptoms are like influenza, COVID-19, and even malaria.  Symptoms usually begin 4-10 days after infection.

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) reports that Peru has the highest fatality rate for the disease in South America.  Regions most affected include La Libertad (4,207 cases), Piura (4,155 cases), Ica (3,313 cases), Ancash (2,462 cases), San Martin (1,633 cases), and Lima (1,495 cases).
