The Peruvian government declared a 60-day State of Emergency for the provinces of Trujillo and Patazin the Region of Libertad, starting February 12, 2024. During this time, a curfew is in place between the hours of midnight and 4:00a.m. These curfew hours maybe subject to change with little to no warning. The State of Emergency is in response to a spike in crime, with over 30,000 crimes registered in the region, 11,000 of which involved theft and robbery.
U.S. citizens throughout Peru are reminded to exercise increased caution and maintain situational awareness. Remember to avoid large crowds, avoid traveling at night, and only carry minimal valuables on your person. If approached by someone who attempts to take your belongings, it is usually best to comply with their demands to maintain your personal safety. Be sure to store valuables in a hotel safe, or in a vehicle trunk while traveling, and to follow the instructions of local officials.
