Routine Message – U.S. Embassy Lima (December 28, 2018)

Location: Peru

Effective January 1, 2019, the Government of Peru will begin enforcing an existing law that requires all foreign travelers to have a passport valid for a minimum of six months past time of entry into Peru.  Peruvian authorities will deny entry into Peru for travelers not meeting this requirement.

U.S. citizens traveling to or living in Peru should ensure their passports meet this requirement.   The U.S. Embassy cannot intervene on behalf of travelers not abiding by Peruvian law.

Actions to Take:

  • Verify that your passport will be valid for at least six months from your planned date of entry into Peru.
  • For travelers in the United States: Passport renewal in the United States takes four to six weeks, but can be expedited in two weeks for an extra fee.  For expedited renewal, travelers must apply in person with a copy of their itinerary at a passport agency. In emergency travel situations, a passport can be issued in 72 hours.  More information on passport renewal, and expedited passport renewal, can be found at the following link: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/apply-renew-passport/hurry.html
  • For travelers in Peru: Passports can be renewed by making an appointment at the U.S. Embassy in Lima, following the instructions found here: https://pe.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/passports/.  To apply for an emergency passport for immediate travel, please send an email to LimaACS@state.gov
