LOCATION: Peru (Affected Regions Listed Below)
EVENT:
Peru’s national meteorological service (SENAMHI) issued an alert about strong winds forecasted for the Ica coastal area April 5-7. Gusts may exceed 33 km per hour and raise dust and sand that may cause limited visibility. The increased winds may impact tourism in Nasca, Palpa, and the Ballestas Islands. In particular, tourism authorities noted that winds may affect flights to view the Nazca Lines, as well as marine vessels departing for the Ballestas Islands.
U.S. citizens residing in or traveling to Ica and nearby coastal regions are recommended to take preventive actions and monitor guidance of media and local authorities. Review the Meteorological Alert via SENAMHI’s website for additional information.
Actions to Take:
· Avoid the affected areas and routes. Find alternative routes to your destination.
· Monitor local media and government agencies for updates.
· Be aware of your surroundings. Flash floods and mudslides can occur without warning.
· Have an evacuation plan that does not rely on U.S. government assistance.
· Enroll in STEP (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program) to receive alerts and messaging from the U.S. Embassy in Lima.
